I set out to write a lyric which makes no reference to a perspective — no first-person, no second-person, barely a third person. It’s really harder than you think. As usual, I really make no effort to make much sense, although a friend’s bad news seems to have influenced some of the verses.<\/p>\n

\nThe heavy air hangs thick with drying rain
\nSomewhere in the hum of distant streets
\nA drum beats out of time and out of space
\nPromises were never meant to be
\nThe ink still wet from where the page was torn
\nBoth sides not so eagar to agree
\nOn how the final outcome favors all
\nSomehow all the details came to be
\nWithout a guiding hand to show the way
\nA single touch, a single glance
\nAn undetermined length of time
\nA double take, a double shot
\nOf circumstances misaligned
\nEven after everything went dark
\nA heavy breath cut through the silent air
\nPrying eyes were never meant to see
\nA world so out of space and out of time
\nWords became the only way to see
\nHow nothing really changed from day to day
\nWhen the story ends, a life begins
\nWithout a history to call its own
\nEverything turned out the way it should
\nWhich is to say, it turned out not at all
